The Oz Project

          About The Oz Project

The concept of The Oz Project began as a dream in the fall of 2004. I had been fostering two little male cairn puppies for Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network.  I needed shoulder surgery so I had to have them placed into another foster home. I then realized how great the need was for a halfway house for our little rescues. It was then that the seed was planted.

While I was recovering from surgery we purchased a cabin in the woods. The cabin is situated on five secluded acres and has an existing pole barn. It was just what we were looking for. It was far from neighbors and the perfect place for cairns to come until foster homes became available for them.

Like so many dreams there were obstacles and barriers in our way. Finally in the summer of 2006 we felt that we were ready to present our plan to  Col. Potter's founder, Danielle Rackstraw. Thankfully she gave us permission to begin work on our intake center. We named it The Oz Project knowing that is exactly what it would be...A Project.

We had a pole barn but that's all it was, a pole barn. Now it was time to transform it into an intake center. So I packed my clothes and threw a few things into my car and headed north. My journey down the Yellow Brick Road had begun.

The little cairns that would come to Oz would need some things that they had never known before. They would need a clean, dry and safe place to stay.  Their very own bedroom.

Puppy mill dogs spend their lives standing in a 2'x3' wire cage. Sometimes more than one is crowded into this little crate. Making it hard to even lay down to sleep. Many times they are stacked one on top of the other. What little food and water that they get is often contaminated by the dogs above them.

Never again would the OzKids live this way. We started work on the crate room, their new bedroom.

      FIRST WE HUNG THE DRYWALL

THEN WE TAPED AND SANDED IT

THEN WE PUT WOOD PANELING ON THE
  BOTTOM

WE INSULATED THE FLOOR OF CRATE AREA

       THEN WE PRIMED AND PAINTED

NOW IT WAS READY FOR OUR GUESTS

But wait! They will need more. What if the weather is bad or they are sick? They will need a clean dry place for exercise and potty. We will build an indoor exercise pen.
